Suame is Tasty - Majority Leader going unopposed or there'll be contest?

The New Patriotic Party NPP has set April 2020 to conduct primaries for its parliamentary candidates and one constituency hovering the heat is Suame Constituency.

Incumbent MP is the famous Hon. Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, majority leader in Parliament who doubles as the Minister of parliamentary affairs is actually on a hot seat as to whether he should be giving the nod to go unopposed or allow others to contest him come April 2020.

Earlier in the week a release came out that Suame Constituency executives and Electoral area coordinators met and made a declaration which suggests the honourable mp MUST go unopposed because of his influence in Parliament and the party at large. Below is the release

"Suame Constituency executives and Electoral Area Coordinators, have outdoored their readiness for the Majority Leader and Member of Parliament for Suame Hon Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, to go unopposed.

According to the executives, the legislator deserves not to be contested due to his role in parliament.

Speaking at a dinner organized by Hon Kyei Mensah-Bonsu, the Constituency Women's Organiser, Abigail Osei Tawiah , stressed the need for the MP to go unopposed.

She noted that the party needs Hon Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu in parliament due to his leadership role and experience.

According to her, the Majority Leader is one of the best legislators therefore should be given the opportunity to nurture others to enhance competence in legislation.

On his part, the Constituency Chairman , Bright Osei Agyemang, was happy at the collective decision to protect the MP from being contested during this year's parliamentary primaries to be conducted by the party.

Mr Osei Agyemang noted that polling station executives should ensure that Majority Leader goes unopposed.

According to him, both national and Regional executives of the party support the move to protect the seat of the Majority Leader.

Mr Osei Agyemang therefore asked members of the party to support the bid of the Majority Leader for another four years for a successful drive of parliamentary proceedings.

The Bremang East Electoral Area Coordinator Mr Akwasi Mensah disclosed that out of the thousand delegates, only 20 are praying for others to contest the Majority Leader.

Mr Mensah therefore advised such persons to support the decision for the MP to go unopposed adding any attempt to contest him will be waste of money and time since such aspirants will automatically lose the election."

A section of the Polling station executives who in actual fact considered as the majority when it comes to voting has also released a statement debunking the earlier release by the Constituency executives and Electoral area coordinators.

The release stressed on the fact that if democracy is to work in the Constituency then we shouldn't try to protect any candidate, hence there has to be a contest come April 2020. Check out the full statement

"Our attention has been drawn to a press release by some selected Officers in our constituency headed by Mr. Bright Osei Agyemang-Chairman of the SUAME constituency NPP that the Constituency Executives and the Electoral area coordinators have endorsed Hon. Osei Bonsu-Kyei Mensah to go unopposed for Suame Constituency parliamentary primaries.

The statement states their readiness for the Majority Leader and minister of Parliamentary affairs Hon Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, to go unopposed.

This should be disregarded as gabbage and shameful.

Suame Constituency has Nine (9) electoral areas with 800+ delegates whereas, delegates present at the said Dinner were less than fifty (50). Heitherto,
the individual who designed that “communique” on this platform is not a delegate but a known friend and ally of the the constituency chairman, Isn’t it laughable and ridiculous?!

If the said loyal faction is sure Hon Osei Bonsu- Kyei Mensah has the support of delegates, they should convince him to avail himself for a contest.
The hon Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu has gone unopposed since 1995, 1999, 2003, 2007, 2011, and finally broke that virginity in 2015.

Looking at this record, The constituency has done him much good so why does He want to convince the electorates and delegates to affirm in a “virgin race”.

I humbly entreat the media and the general public to treat it with the contempt it deserves and a total ridicule of a write up as We in the NPP believe in democracy and the will of the people."
