Joseph Otsiman for AMAA’s top Award

The Africa Movie Academy Awards nominations were announced two weeks ago and Ghana’s Magic the burial of Kojo is among the highest nominated film bagging 10 nominations with other Ghanaian films like Azali, Vagabonds grabbing a nominations each.

This year, the 2016 AMAA best actor in a supporting role Joseph Otsiman who was recently appointed as the Executive Secretary for the Ghana chamber of Content Producers, got another nod by the academy, nominating him for best actor in a leading role for his performance in the The Burial of Kojo alongside top African actors like actors like Chinedu Ikedieze also known aka Aki and Jimmy Jean Louis for his Robert McQueen role in Rattlesnakes.

The Burial of Kojo is a 2018 drama film set in Ghana, written and directed by Blitz Bazawule. Filmed entirely in Ghana on a micro-budget, with local crew and several first-time actors, the film tells the story of Kojo (Joseph Otsiman), who is left to die in an abandoned gold mine, as his young daughter Esi (newcomer Cynthia Dankwa) travels through a spirit land to save him. The film was produced by Blitz Bazawule Ama Abebrese and Kwaku Obeng Boateng.

The film had its world premiere in New York on 21 September 2018, at the Urban World Film Festival, where it was recognized as Best Narrative Feature (World Cinema). It is distributed by ARRAY and was released on the popular streaming service Netflix on 31 March 2019, making it the first Ghanaian film to premiere in selected countries worldwide, on Netflix.

It’s young lead actress Cynthia Dankwa also picked a nomination for best young promising actor; kobina Aminssah sam popularly known for Beast of no Nation also picked a nomination for best actor in a supporting role.

The Africa Movie Academy Awards, popularly known as AMAA and The AMA Awards, are presented annually to recognize excellence among professionals working in, or non-African professionals who have contributed to, the African film industry. It was founded by Peace Anyiam-Osigwe and is run through the Africa Film Academy. The awards are aimed at honoring and promoting excellence in the African movie industry as well as uniting the African continent through arts and culture.

The award presentation is attended by numerous media representatives, celebrities, politicians, journalists, actresses and actors from all across the world. AMA Awards are widely considered to be Africa's most important film event and the most prestigious film award in Africa.

Speaking in an interview, Joseph disclosed how important the nomination means for him for his new office as the executive secretary and also a board member of the actor’s chapter of the Ghana chamber of content Producers.

Ghana Chamber of Content Producers is an independent organization certified by the Registrar Generals Department established in 2019, the chamber seeks to provide support and quality control for Ghanaian content producers, policy advocacy and promotion of audio-visual and literary content in Ghana.

The chambers’ core mandate is to develop, promote and market Ghanaian contents locally and internationally, to identify opportunities and facilitate the growth of the audio-visual and literary industry in Ghana and as well generate, manage and disseminate industry research, information and market data, including acting as a repository and archive of Ghanaian audio-visual and literary records.

The chamber also seeks to coordinate and ensure persons, association and organization participating in the production of film, music, music videos, photography, documentary, stills, animation, literal works, new media and related media meet international standard among others.
